Building muscle can offer many health benefits such as increased bone, muscle, tendon and ligament strength, improved joint function and stability, increased metabolism and better heart function. But muscle-building can take many different forms, and the results you want will dictate the approach you choose.

To a bodybuilder, for example, increased muscle mass is essential while a power athlete such as a high jumper would think this less important or performance-damaging.

The repetition ranges in your weight training routine are specific to the muscle adaptations they will trigger.

For instance, one to four reps with a large resistance will stimulate power gains, four to eight reps will stimulate strength gains, eight to 12 reps will stimulate muscle building, and 12-25 reps will stimulate local muscle endurance.

So what do you want to achieve from your training? It’s fair to say most of us are not body builders or high jumpers – it’s more about wanting to feel healthier and stronger, and looking better in a T-shirt. There is growing evidence that changes in body shape and strength and tone improvements only require muscular fatigue – regardless of the load. So local muscular endurance training (using smaller dumbbells, or even only your own body weight) but with higher reps – will still allow for that growth.

So try and include functional movements in your workouts – squats and lunges are great examples – but with lighter weights than usual (or even none at all).

Not only are these exercises effective, but they’re more relevant in your everyday life than the clean and press or snatch you often see being (badly) performed at one rep max in the gym.

And if you do head to the free weights section, remember it’s the level of muscular fatigue that counts, not the size of the weights you’re lifting – or your ability to grunt like a wounded warthog with every rep.
